Selfie/Beauty

CARINA LINDMEIER

Selfie/Beauty

The starting point of the project is the “selfie” and self-presentation. It is quite common these days to create a perfect presentation of oneself in photos covering up any “flaw” and “imperfection” by using digital editing and filters. Here, an abstraction of selfie images is intended to establish analogies to the monographs and nature studies of Ernst Haeckel. His drawing studies create a direct connection between the aesthetic and the scientific. The uppermost order for this zoologist was vividness: In his illustrations, he shows us what exists and how beautiful it is, just like our intention with selfie images to show how beautiful we are.

The superimposition of these pictures/layers shall create a new complete picture, a graphic object that combines boththe “perfect” world of nature and the phenomenon of self-presentationWe feel the yearning for connectionwant to be one with nature, and have a conscious approach to our environmentThen againwe indulge in the urge for “artificial” (self-)presentationthus we deform and “bend” ourselves. In the end, these ideas of beauty and perfection can only be compared to an endless loop – a Möbius strip – with no fixed point of reference.
